Virtual Classroom: Pros and Cons

PROS:

  • Global Audience
  • One of the greatest things of teaching live online is that you can pull your audience from across the world.

  • Relationship B1uilding
  • Nothing builds rapport with students quicker then a live round robin introduction and group discussions. It allows the teacher to be seen as a real person and also to become a trusted technical adviser.

  • Student Convenience
  • The ability for students to join the class from work or home from anywhere around the world is a great advantage. It also means they don’t need to worry about transportation, traffic, parking and the time to get too and from training. They can choose the environment that they personally learn the best in.

  • Virtual reality is great because it lets us explore different realities and alternate our experiences.
  • Learning from anywhere there is an internet connection.
  • Makes education accessible to those who lead full and busy lives.
  • Creates the opportunity for 24/7 learning.
  • Quality online learning provides many opportunities for assessment- opportunities that involve the teacher, but also one that exploit the influences and expertise of peers and external experts.
  • It is very affordable.
  • Prons

CONS:

  • Online students do not get the one-on-one interaction with their peers and college professors that they would in traditional settings.
  • Online Courses are Not Available For All Subjects.
  • The possibility of students getting addicted to their virtual world is also big. It increases the screen time of the student.
  • Advanced technology is often expensive.
  • The language barrier is often a big problem when it comes to education. With virtual reality, every possible language can be implemented within the software. Therefore, language will no longer represent a barrier for student’s education plans.
  • No "teacher" available for instant feedback to questions or confirming of learned material.
  • Cons

EFFECTS ON CULTURE OF EDUCATION

Distance-education technology has moved towards multimedia-oriented systems which allow an effective synergy of synchronous and asynchronous interaction. Virtual classrooms have become more and more popular, providing a multi-media context for synchronous teaching and learning at universities world-wide.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

Things that effect teachers both in negative and positive way:

  • It's unstable.
  • Online teaching is often not a stable job. A student can leave or cancel their class at the drop of a hat.

  • Limited teaching methods
  • The range of teaching methods that you have at your disposal is limited. You’ll have to rely mainly on audio and visual methods. And you won’t be able to use any kinaesthetic methods like physical games or role-plays.

  • Time and Location Flexibility.
  • A teacher can choose to teach at any time that suits him/her.

  • More Teaching Opportunities
  • An education medium without any time and location constraints obviously paves the way significantly more opportunities for the teachers

  • Organization
  • Another major benefit of teaching online is that everything is well organized, avoiding any mismanagement.

MAJOR DRAWBACKS :-

Students who are in Urban and metro cities with a good internet connection have been able to join in for the classes, but those who lives in villages or are in small town struggle with the internet speed and are mostly unable to attend.

  • It is not possible to teach students in rural areas through mobile and Zoom classes.
  • Every student does not have the kind of devices, laptops, smartphone, or money to keep the connection going.
  • Big Problems to the Teachers who are not technically sound and don’t know how to record video lectures, take online classes through different apps.

CONCLUSION:

When it comes to virtual schools there is no right answer. They have both pros and cons. Online learning should be seen as a complement and extension of classical forms of learning. Not even the best online course can fully replace the personal contact with a teacher, or the human relationships that develop in a group. So, traditional classes shouldn’t be replaced with online learning.
